Belleville is better known for its cheap-and-cheerful Chinese restaurants than its trendy eateries. But this is exactly where the trio behind the simply-named La Cave de Belleville decided to open their wine bar-cum-restaurant after falling in love with a former leather workshop at 51 rue de Belleville. They asked architect duo Laure Wormser and Charlotte Vinet to transform it into a cozy restaurant but with all its old industrial charm intact – mission accomplished! Visitors can graze the deli, sample cured meats (cecina, serrano ham and dried sausage from southwest France) and cheese (manchego, Saint-Nectaire fermier, Brie de Meaux) in the first eating and tasting area, or settle down in a second eating area, which can also be hired for private events. The architects ingeniously decided to keep the gorgeous wooden counter and shelving which they’ve paired with a selection of furniture to give the space a unique, warm personality.
